Thrirty Two Degrees and Falling

We do pretty well
For hairless monkeys
Our evolutionary kin
Who fling their feces
Through the bars of their cells

We can soar
Like birds
Better than birds!
We fly higher than they
On kerosene wings

I flew in the other night
From a long stay in LA
My cousin is dying
Cancer erodes the source of his strength
Like rust

He made his life writing songs
You know them
We lay beside his pool
Watching the hawks soar
Through the warm Pacific air

I returned in time for snow
The flakes . . .
You know them
Singular iceform constellations
They form around a speck

That speck
That damned speck
Our monkey nature
That damned speck
Forgive us
